Cycle Islington, previously ICAG (Islington Cyclists Action Group) was set up in June 1976, a good two years before our mothership the London Cycling Campaign.
Celebrations are therefore in order to mark this important cycling milestone in the borough.
The CI committee has set up a small working group who have come up with some great ideas on how to celebrate.
During Bike Week (9 – 15 June), on 11 June, we will be holding our exhibition and launch event at Islington Museum in the south of the borough with a showing of a special video about our history and some VIP cycling guests and local politicians. Invitations will be sent out during April.
On Sunday 21 June (Fathers day), we have a marshalled Bike Round the Borough ride for all ages and led by Steve; the route forms a figure of eight, starting and finishing at Highbury Fields where there will be a 50th birthday cake to share at the end. There will also be John’s famous customised wooden games to keep children (and adults) happy. Registrations are open – it’s free, so sign up for one or both rides.
And on Friday 26 June, we have organised a ceilidh at Hocking Hall in the north of the borough with the fabulous Muckers, the Hackney-based band and caller who are known to many from their appearances at our sister borough Hackney’s Burns nights. Tickets available here – no tickets on the door so get yours in advance.
And we’ve set up our own digital shop selling some 50th birthday souvenirs such as t-shirts for women, men and children but also there’s a tote bag and a teacloth so something for everyone ! Have a look to see what summer gear you might like to wear at some of our special events.
There might well be more activities – the working group is full of ideas – and we’ll keep you updated here. Hope to see you at one, if not all, of our celebrations.
